Greetings, everyone! Today, I'm thrilled to share my beloved recipe for Italian Anise Cookies. For those unfamiliar, anise boasts a flavor akin to black licorice—a taste that tends to spark either fervent adoration or a polite pass. If the licorice essence isn't your cup of tea, fear not! You can easily swap it out for your preferred extract flavor. :)

Personally, I revel in the abundance of delectable treats that accompany this time of year. The blogosphere overflows with an array of cookies and delightful desserts—fortunately, indulging in their sight and aroma is delightfully guilt-free!

Italian Anise Cookies hold a special place in my heart; not only are they incredibly easy to make, but their soft, puffy texture never fails to captivate. They aren't just delightful for personal enjoyment—these cookies make splendid gifts and are a charming addition to any cookie tray or alongside other confections.

Now, onto the recipe:

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 325°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, blend the sugar, melted butter, eggs, milk, and anise extract until thoroughly mixed. Gradually beat in the flour, baking powder, and salt until well incorporated.

3. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, ensuring they're spaced about 2 inches apart.

4. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the bottoms achieve a light golden brown hue. Once done, transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

For the Glaze:

1. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and anise extract in a small bowl until the mixture achieves a smooth consistency.

2. Dip the tops of the cooled cookies into the glaze and while it's still moist, sprinkle on the nonpareils. Allow the glaze to set until it hardens.

These delightful treats can be stored airtight at room temperature for up to two weeks or frozen for an entire month.

Remember, if the licorice-like essence isn't your preference, feel free to experiment with your favorite extract flavor instead!
